Free College Level Education
Posted by: Sciencebook Squad
'MOOCs' is the term used to describe Massive Online Open Courseware, an MIT initiative that has made college education open source. I first learnt about MOOCs from co-founder, Professor Shigeru Miyagawa, whilst attending my first formal conference as an education researcher. In the simplest of terms, students can gain a quality, college level education, without the price tag (it's absolutely free!). This initiative has really addressed many of the problems associated with education today. Current issues in traditional tertiary education include: monetary and logistical barriers to education, a lack of choice in university courses, and too large a focus on rigorous testing, rather than applying knowledge and enjoying learning! MOOCs are a great way to learn; there are so many different units available, ranging from beginner to advanced, and you can receive a certificate to show your qualifications (usually $50). Furthermore, Masters or even Micromasters programs are available too, at just a fraction of the cost one would usually pay!
